Pages Honoring our Guys!

Let’s be real. Scrapbooking guys can be hard — especially if you are a bright colored whimsical loving paper crafter. Don’t despair — it can be done. When you have paper you absolutely love, but it is made up of lots of bright colors and almost childlike balance it with black and white.

For this layout I primarily used the sides of paper from Clique Kits that were black and white. I backed it on a solid and added just a pop of colors with strips of paper. I had to throw some rainbows on it because I am just into them! By using a solid alphabet for a title in different fonts it pulls it all together.

For the next layout I still stuck to black and white as the primary color scheme. However, I used pictures that were a little goofy. I mean, it is all about a weird Al concert! You really can’t get more goofy in that in adult life. From there I was able to venture out and add some whimsical elements.

By using a sketchy black and white title it grounded it.

Masculine layouts have gotten challenging for me because I am a colorful whimsical crafter, but the challenge is super fun! Trying to make my style and masculine pictures work is flexing my creative muscle.

A Little Birdie HOP!

I am stoked about today’s hop! Make sure you visit Designer Crafts after you read this post for the hop list. It combines my first love (scrapbooking) with mixed media. This fabulous line truly bridges the gap between paper crafting and mixed media. Here is what Little Birdie sent me for this hop and their Grand Launch in the USA!

It’s All About the Birds!

What could be better than celebrating the Grand Launch of Little Birdie than to create layouts featuring birds? My son has wanted a bird for several years. For his Birthday we finally got him one –Ari. She is a sweet little thing that has captured out hearts.

The Mixed Media paste can be used two ways. You can use it as a modeling paste (which I did in this layout) and/or gesso by adding water. To create this type of background use the paste over a stencil. Once it dries mist it. If the mist is to vibrant add a light layer of water before the mist dries.

I finished off the layout by adding a little water to the paste and flicked it on the page.

For this layout I used the paste as gesso by adding water and then applying it with a paint brush. Once it dried I applied layers of the Color wash making sure each dried between layers.

The paper pack came with a fussy cut sheet. I ran mine through a Scan N Cut. This made it really easy to add to layouts with the hard work done This sweet blue bird is from the fussy cut sheets.

This was my final layout I created with the Woodland Series and it is my favorite. I utilized the images I cut on my Scan N Cut in several spots on this layout. My favorite was tucking the birds into the flowers.

A Little Bitty Art

Have you ever had an art itch? Something that you just had to create because you could not stop thinking about it? When I saw the little journaling cards and twine I had to create a sweet little ATC.

Background Creation

I have created a video showing how to create these backgrounds. I demonstrate how to use the Mixed Media Paste through a stencil, how to use it as gesso, color washing and adding layers.

Back to My Roots!

I got into paper crafting over 30 years ago before I even knew there was a name for my hobby — scrap booking! I even got my start in the craft industry with scrap booking. I spent about a decade creating scrapbook pages for a few different kit clubs and had to walk away to care for my Mom who had emergency open heart surgery. Back in the day there was no such thing as scheduling a post ahead of time.

When I returned to the industry in 2017 I was told my scrap booking pages was not where it was at. I really took that to heart and it kind of scared me because that was what I was about. I spent the first two years focusing on trends and mixed media and I really missed making layouts. Finally in the spring of 2019 I returned to my roots. I still am dabbling in cards, Bible Art, Art Journal and ATC, but my heart is scrap booking and I will not ever walk away from it again.

Easter Blessings

This first layout I documented my place setting at my 2019 Easter table. The paper was created by my local craft store. It is super soft and gorgeous.

One thing I like to do to make a title stand out without taking away from the layout is to add a piece of vellum behind it.

Seeing Stars

I adore this picture of my son. He was having so much fun! I used a piece of Creative Embellishment chipboard painted yellow with glitter to help create a focal point.

Friday Night Lights

I love white space on a layout. It creates eye popping focal points and an area for the eye to rest. Some find it plain and that’s okay. Art is a personal thing and what one prefers another may not. I really wanted this gorgeous sunset picture to shine.

Golf

My son had the honor of participating in the golf tournament that his great grandparents founded about 50 years ago. The first layout is of him during the day with his golf cart crew.

The second and final layout is of the dinner that night! He is sitting with his grandma (daughter of the founder), great grandma (founder) and uncle (current chairman).

Harry Potter and Magical Spells!

Since it is almost Halloween I thought it would be the perfect time to share a few layouts I made to document our time in World of Wizards (Universal Studios). We went on vacation in the summer of 2019 and spent a day with Harry Potter and all things magical.

The paper line I used for these layouts is by Photoplay. I adore the design, but do not like that it is glossy. If I was not desperate for it, I probably would have not bought it just because it was glossy.

The conductor at Platform 9 3/4 was amazing!

This picture of my son is my favorite! He looks so much like a wizard and was smiling. It is hard to get a teenager to smile sometimes 🙂

My favorite part of the park is the Butterbeer. I liked it so much that I had to make some at home!

So Sketchy!

It’s my favorite time of the month — HOP TIME! For this hop the Rita Barakat design team has teamed up with Finder’ Keepers and 3L Scrapbook Adhesive. Both companies sent us a wonderful selection of products. I used mine on my first paper crafting love — Scrapbooking. Make sure you check out the rest of the hop! The list is at the bottom 🙂

A Nod to the Past

Back in 2005 I had lost my passion for scrap booking. I went on a hunt to find something to spark my creativity and found Scrap Goods. It was a subscription kit in which each month a box full of supplies and a lesson on a new technique. There also was an amazing creative and caring online forum that was my first experience with social media. If it wasn’t for that club I truly don’t know where I would be today. Sadly, they went out of business when the economy started to dive. In it’s honor I created a kit with the new supplies sent by Finder’s Keepers and 3L Adhesive along with stuff from my stash.

What is In It

Here is a video of what is in my kit along with a technique tutorial and samples!

The Sketch Challenge

As promised in the video here is the sketch for you:

Interpret this any way you want. Look at it like a guide to help spark your creativity. Maybe you are not a scrap booker. Maybe you are a card or mixed media artist — use it in your art form.

This is what I did with it:

Make sure you upload your creation to Instagram tagging Betz Golden. I want to see it. If your account is public, I will share it too!

Layouts

Here are the rest of the layouts I created and the TN for my sketches!
