Do You Want to Flip or Flap?

The title is corny I know, but the question is legit. If you have ever put together a scrapbook you understand the frustration of wanting to put one event on one page only to discover you just do not have enough room. So, do you not scrap some of the pictures or do you just do an entire album for that one event that you really just wanted to do a page for? I have a solution for you! Just add flips or flaps.

Flip

This is a fun event I attend every year and I diffidently want to remember it. However, I do not need a ton of layouts in my scrapbook — one will do. So, I solved that problem by adding flips!

After I completed that layout I found another stack of pictures that were super important, but really only needed one page. So, I created this:

Here is a video showing you how to create layouts with a flip.

Flap

Another way to add more pictures to a layout is to add a flap. It extends the size of the layout, but folds up nicely for your album. I was able to document our entire Christmas season on one layout.

Since I am featuring so many photos on a layout it was important that I sectioned each event off and used very little embellishments. I let the pictures to the talking. Here is a video on how to do this:

How to Get the Most Out of A Paper Pack

Rarely do I ever buy pattern paper. In fact, I have contemplated selling all of it because I prefer to make my own. It takes a lot to impress me, so when I do take the plunge and buy a pack I have a plan to use all of it. If I can not think of a way to use it up, I do not buy it. I came across the perfect summer paper from Close to my Heart. It is bright, colorful and full of all the summer things. I created 6 cards and three double page layouts with it. I am sharing all of it with you including a video and the measurements for each project I made.

Chill

For this Layout you will need two pieces of 12 by 12 for your base. For the layout, select 3 sheets of pattern of paper.

Sheet 1: 2 pieces at 4 inches by 12 inches

Sheet 2: 4.25 by 6.25 inches.

Sheet 3: 2 pieces at 3 by 4 inch pieces and 1 piece 4 by 6 inch pieces.

Assemble using the above sample as your reference.

The Perfect Day

Select two pieces of cardstock for your base. Once you have your base pages set them aside and select 5 pieces of pattern paper.

The Extras!

In addition to the Summer Vibes Paper Pack, I also picked up the coordinating stamp, die cuts, acrylic shapes and sticker sheet. I do not care for stickers, so I like to dust the back of each of them with powder and adhere them with pop dots. The powder gets the adhesive less sticky and the pop dots add dimension and interest. Please make sure you check out the video I posted in the beginning of this article to see a walk thru of the goodies and more explanation on each thing I created. You can find everything here.

Layouts from Trash

I created these layouts from trash. Literally, everything was heading into the garbage can. Then I felt this overwhelming feeling of guilt. I just could not throw anything away! It went against every grain in my body. I am a scrapper at heart — meaning I like to use scraps to create. I love repurposed home decor pieces and using things in ways they were not intended to be used in. Same goes in my art! The older and more beat up the better. With that being said I made these two layouts from trash.

Now, I know you are looking at these layouts (especially the second one) and wondering why on earth I was going to throw any of that away. It’s shameful really…my reason….”last in the package” is the reason. I only had one or a few left. They were taking up precious space in my craft room. My real estate is valuable and I don’t have much room. It’s like Manhattan in craft land. Therefore, if it is just sitting there doing nothing it has to go! In this case, these items were spared.

I used nothing new on either of these layouts. I must confess that creating these was quite gratifying. Something happens in my soul when I am able to create something from nothing much less something from what I had decided was trash.

O-Fish-ally Awesome Cards

I am currently obsessed with this scene buider fish stamp. The best part is for this month, April 2020, it is only $5! Needless to say I snatched it up and created two interactive cards with it.

I had a been playing with spinner cards all week. I had an idea stuck in my head on creating a card with this set as a spinner — but a little different. I actually wanted to expose the majority of the circle that spins to create an illusion that the fish were swimming. To hide the brad that is needed to make it spin I added the sand castle. Now the fish are swimming around it.

For the second card I was inspired by a porthole and knew a shaker would be perfect! To see how both of these cards were created please watch this video tutorial I made for you.

Here is a list of all the products I used to make both of these cards:

Unicorns, Magic and Rainbows Oh My!

Unicorns and Rainbows are still all the rage and they are not going anywhere anytime soon! Close to My Heart has an adorable stamp and die set featuring these magical creatures. The set is quite diverse and can be used for a multitude of projects. I created several cards with this set from cool backgrounds to shakers! Here is a fun video showing how you can create different backgrounds with re-inkers you have in your stash.

Shake It!

Do you have odds and ends of things that could be used as a shaker? Why not create a few shaker cards with them? I love how easy they are to make with these fabulous shaker sets. Nothing goes to waste! Even the inside can be used on other projects as pop dots.

Here are the cards I created:

I found the fun shiny paper in my stash. It is so magical! My local craft store carries it! Wouldn’t it be fun as mermaid scales too?

What is your unicorn? What makes you happy? Brings you joy? Let me know!

Be A Shark!

Isn’t it wonderful when you can stretch your supplies? I am learning how to create art in my Bible. I enjoy using stamps, but once I use the set in my Bible it is a challenge to use it again. So, I have tried to pick at least two passages to use the same stamp set on. I also like to use the stamps outside of the Bible on other projects.

You Are Jawsome

I actually used two stamp sets for these projects.

Liquid Glass or Glossy Accents are perfect on bubbles to give them shine. I used glimmer mist on the back ground and watercolors on the images. To stamp archival ink was the best option because it is not water reactive. Baby Shark stamp set can be found here.

Little Duckies

I utilized the ducks in the set as well as the shower head to create an entirely different type of Bible Art page and card.

How do you stretch a stamp set?

Let’s Hear It For the Critters!

Close to My Heart came out with an adorable pet line last season. I normally do not purchase kits because I have a slew of products, but my pet paper supply is low. You don’t have to twist my arm to get me to make a purchase of cute whimsical brightly colored cats and dogs!

Krypto Layout

Sadly I only created one layout with the paper and stamp set because I do not have many non scrapped pictures of my boy!

Cards!

I was not done playing with this fun line yet, so I made some cards.

A lot of these were made with the stickers in the pack. I am not a sticker fan. In fact, I normally don’t like them. I think they are cheesy, but these worked great for this set! There is a childlike whimsy to this line and that is why the stickers work!

The cat cards were entirely made from the stickers in the kit. I bought the dog stamp set so I was able to utilize some of those on the following cards.

BUT!!!

These are my favorite pet cards I have ever made. Sadly, they are sympathy. I made them from my heart though and it is just a small thing I can send to someone that has had to lose their fur baby.

Close to My Heart still has the stamps and dies I used to create this last set of cards. You can find them here.

So, I want to know — dogs or cats? Do you have a preference?

A Few of My Favorite Things in 2019!

I must admit that as a crafter of over 3 decades it is challenging to find new products that blow me away. My 2019 list of My Favorite Things are not all new things to the craft industry. The items I have listed are currently my “go to” things this year. Most are new, but not all and there is one that might surprise you! Here is the direct links to each item. To see them up close, in action and more information please check out the video I created for you!

The List!

Rinse Well The most go to thing on my desk to clean my brushes!

Ultra Mod Podge This is a multi-purpose medium! It is a glue, sealer and can be used to paint pour. I like it because I can use it as traditional Mod Podge and get no brush stroke marks.

Dina Wakley Media Journal The paper in this little journal is amazing! It is super absorbent with wonderful texture and thickness.

Make Art Station I think it is the magnets that set this apart for me. They don’t pinch!

Simon Hurley Stamps Not only are these super cute, but they also can work with other sets in his line.

Archival Mini Ink Pads The best waterproof ink pads around and in the perfect size for my over crowded craft room (my real estate in my studio is super valuable!)

Dome Ink Blenders Not only do they leave no harsh lines I like them better than blender brushes. They are cheap and can be used with a multitude of handles.

Catherine Pooler Mini Ink Pads Once again the size is what gets me! Take the best colored ink around and put them in an easy to store container. You will want the refills for these!

Etchall Stencil Spray I like this better than the trending Pixi spray because I can actually find it and it’s not sold out. I have been using this for years!

Tri-Blend Markers I appreciate that this solves all my shading questions in one marker! No longer trying to match and buy three markers. Tri Blends take the guess work out of it.

I hope you enjoyed this year’s list! Now, I want to know…what are your favorites for 2019? Tell me in the comments!

Elves for Preschoolers

My Mom is a preschool teacher and I offered to make all of her students’ families cards. I thought these elves were the sweetest! It took me about three hours to create 16 cards (4 of each design) because I used a card making workshop from Close to My Heart.

Elf Cards

How to Color An Elf

There are several different ways to color in the sweet elves. I decided to use the Tri Blend Spectrum Noir Markers in Tan, Dark Red, Green, and Fair Skin Tone. I like these because they are matched perfectly for flawless shading. It is like getting three alcohol markers in one for a fraction of the price.

Here is a video tutorial on how to use them and color in the elves:

The Great Outdoors

One thing that my family is doing a lot of is getting outside! My husband and daughter trained for a triathlon last summer. My son went hiking and we all had fun exploring local trails.

My daughter got a job as front desk receptionist at The Fitness Institute. Her new passion for health led to an entire overhaul on our family starting with my husband. He went from 430 pounds to 325 in just under seven months. I soon joined in and started working out with my daughter’s trainer (pictured above). Instead of sitting at home and playing video games my husband and daughter started training for a triathlon together. Not only did they get fit they bonded!

Using the same line and stamp set from Close to My Heart I created a page of my son at the top of the mountain on a hike. For my husband’s 44th Birthday he wanted to go on a hike — so that is what we did.
